1. Location & Geography
  • Location: Situated in Truong Yen Commune, Hoa Lu District, Ninh Binh. It is conveniently located just 4km from the Trang An Landscape Complex.
  • Landscape: A vast valley protected by steep limestone cliffs, forming a strategic natural fortress.
  • Significance: A Special National Relic site, it served as the capital for three major dynasties: the Dinh King, the Early Le, and the beginning of the Ly dynasty. It remains the spiritual heart of Ninh Binh.

Culture: The site pays tribute to Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang (who unified the nation) and Emperor Le Dai Hanh. The temples feature exquisite 17th-century architecture, highlighted by masterful wood and stone carvings.

  • Historical pilgrimage: Visit the ancient temples, discover Buddhist prayer columns, and admire precious centuries-old artifacts.
  • Ma Yen Mountain Trek: Climb approximately 265 stone steps to the summit of Ma Yen Mountain to visit the tomb of King Dinh and enjoy a panoramic view of the entire ancient capital.
  • Traditional festivals: If visiting in March (Lunar Calendar), you can witness the Hoa Lu Festival with its unique traditional rituals and vibrant local atmosphere.

  • Entrance fee: 20,000 VND per person.

  • The authentic experience:
The Royal Temples: Explore the temples of King Dinh and King Le. A must-see is the "Stone Beds" (Long Sang) in the temple courtyards-a masterpiece of ancient stone carving.
Cycling: The area is exceptionally flat and spacious. You can rent a bicycle to ride along shaded village paths, passing through ancient gates and connecting with nearby Tuyet Tinh Coc.

  • Luxury shared limousine: The most popular choice from Hanoi (approx. 1.5 - 2 hours). 
  • Private car: Direct travel via Phap Van - Cau Gie Highway or National Highway 1A.
  • Train: Take a scenic train ride to Ninh Binh Station, then a short 7km taxi/Grab ride to the site.
  • Local travel: Once in Hoa Lu, renting a bicycle or motorbike is the best way to soak in the fresh countryside air.
